Day 7 - Saturday 29th December

Mim was working at the market in Sedgefield and we had all intended going for breakfast there. The guys, however, were all sound asleep as they had returned late last night or, rather, early in the morning. Nic and I went on our own and after strolling through the food market, Wild Oats, decided on fresh strawberries and coffee for breakfast. Strolled around the stalls and said hi to Mim then went home. The men were just getting up.
It was a gorgeous sunny day; a day for walking on the beach, swimming, boys (Warren, Mike & Trent) surfing and sunbathing.
In the evening the whole family met up at backpackers to watch the sunset and eat pizza baked on the out door oven.

Watch your pizza Trent!

On the way there we spotted a large number of dassies in the bush.

Day 6 - Friday 28th December

On Saturday, Ed, Patrick, Nicola and I took a 45 minute walk along the beach from Wilderness to the Wilderness Beach Hotel where we climbed the many steps up the cliff to the hotel and watched the paragliders for a while before popping into the pub to quench our thirst then back along the beach again. On the way back, Nic and I collected some lovely shells which could be made into pendants. In fact, one actually had a tiny hole in it and Nic hung it on her chain. It looks beautiful.
In the evening, Mike, Trent, Ed and Patrick went to play night golf at Fancourt Golf club with Craig. They started with cocktails and then Mike, Trent and Craig went to play and ed & Pat were in one golf buggy and Chareen and her friend went in another. Apparently the ball they hit flashes so they can track it and there is a light on the flag at the hole and two lights on the ground. They can see nothing between the tee and the hole. Great fun. They got in around 1 a.m.
Nic and I had a more sedate but equally enjoyable evening. We joined Pete and Mim at the night market in Milkwood Village, Wilderness. Sandy and some of her friends were there too. There was live music in the delightful square and we sat at a table and drank wine and shared a platter of starters.

Day 5 - Thursday 27th December

Checked with the family then booked a dinner at Track 29 in Wilderness for all 15 of us after persuading Robert to take the larger than normal number.
We enjoyed a drink of sherry on the station platform before sitting down to a sumptuous feast! The menu was as follows:
  • Ice breaker: Kwaaimans 5 year old white sherry.
  • Starter: Roasted beetroot with strawberry, balsamic and black pepper accompanied by Hill and Dale Merlot Rose
  • Intermediary: Chive crusted tuna with an asparagus and artichoke salad accompanied by Slanghoek Sauvignon Blanc
  • Sorbet: Lemon sorbet
  • Main: Braised rolled stuffed pork bell with Thai brocolli spears, brandied apricots and vanilla mashed potatoes accompanied by Ashanti Shiraz
  • Dessert: Champagne jelly with summer berries accompanied by Rooiberg Brut MCC
  • Rounded off with Mooiuitzicht invalid special reserve port
Robert's wife Sandra was the amazing chef. The price, including wine, was R280 per person and without wine R180 per person. The menu changes according to what is in season and available. I would definitely go again.

Day 4 - Boxing Day

I woke early so walked to Pete & Mim's to collect the car. Only Mim was awake having a coffee in the kitchen. Did not stay as we had to be at George airport by 9.15 to say goodbye to Mom and Mik and Ray who were flying back to Durban. Stopped on the way back at the mall in George for breakfast.

Pat arrived around midday. Ed had gone with Mike to watch him surfing at Victoria Bay. That evening we had a braai on the balcony and talked about the old times.

In the evening, we decided to walk to the local backpackers as we had heard that the views were stunning. We thought we were lost and decided to have a coffee at what was the old station but now appeared to be a cafe or restaurant. It was called track 29 but the owner said it was only a restaurant now serving dinners to a maximum of 12 people. He directed us to the backpackers. We manoeuvred the mud puddles (it had finally stopped raining today but there was still alot of water about) and finally got there. Sandy was there with a lot of her friends and we had a few drinks. The views were great.

Days 2 and 3 Christmas celebrations

On Christmas eve it was overcast, drizzly & cool. I had not reckoned on this in midsummer and only had a cardi with short sleeves so I wore my multi-coloured water proof all day! We all met up at Leila's in George for lunch. We being the four of us, Ed's mom, Mik & Ray, Chareen and family and Saskia and family. Leila's being an old house on a permaculture farm where the food was freshly cooked as we were ready to eat. We took our own wine and bought soft drinks for those who wanted them. The delicious 3 course meal cost R150 per person.

While we were enjoying our meal, two couples came who also wanted to eat but as the place was fully booked (can only take about 24 people), they were ushered into the adjacent bedroom where each couple sat on one of the two single beds and a table for the meal was put between the beds!

It was a unique experience and the food was great. Much fun and laughter was shared.
After our meal, Chareen and Craig treated us all to tea at the golf course club house. A lovely day.

Christmas morning after church, we drove the short distance to Pete and Mim’s for breakfast at 10. And what a breakfast! Smoked salmon, baked ham and wonderful bread not forgetting the bubbly with some of us drinking black velvets and others, bucks fizz.

The only ones, sadly, missing from our immediate families were Sean, Lynda and Senna and Terry, Traer and Nya. Also there were Esme and her daughter, Candice. We had done a secret Santa with each person only having to buy a present for one person and nobody knowing who had given the present. We exchanged gifts after breakfast amid a lot of hilarity.

Dinner was not served until 4 as we enjoyed breakfast a bit too much. What a feast it was. It was as if Pete, Mim, Warren and Sandy had been cooking all week. Two chickens, each with a different stuffing and lamb with garlic and rosemary all cooked on the braai plus an assortment of salads and veg that were out of this world. Then there was the pud and brandy custard, pavlova and trifle.

Mike conducted a general knowledge quiz of the “oldies” versus the “young ‘uns”. I am pleased to report that the winners were the oldies!

It was a lovely day for catching up on news and just enjoying each others’ company.

We left the car there and walked home as we had all been enjoying the array of bubbly and wines.

Day 1 of trip to George and Wilderness

Have been for an early (well for Saturday, early) walk, read the papers, lounged in the pool with my book so maybe now is the time to get on and update the neglected blog.

On Sunday 23rd we set off for our trip up the garden route. Started off slowly as we had to stop a couple of times to secure the boogie and surf boards on the roof. Eventually we stopped at a service station and bought some rope which did the trick. The drive is so beautiful with the mountains to our left and fields to our right. The route pass lots of ostrich and some sheep as well as arable farms. We stopped in Riversonderend to buy pies for breakfast. These are the best pies I have ever tasted – the pastry is to die for. After a loo break we were on our way again. Stopped for a coffee at an Aloe Vera padstal.

Arrived in George around 2 and went to Chareen & Craigs for tea and Christmas cake. All the family were there - Mom, Mik, Ray, Saskia, Andrew, Lara, Matthew, Chareen, Craig, Rhett, Erin and Erin's two Scots friends. Great to see everyone together again. Chareen’s home on Fancourt golf complex is stunning (Rose would love it!)

After tea, tour of the house and discussion of arrangements for the following day’s Christmas Eve lunch we set off the short distance to Wilderness calling in at the agent’s to pick up our apartment keys and then straight to Pete and Mim’s. Another happy reunion. Whispering Leaves is the apt name of their beautiful new home. After tea and a brief discussion of plans for the coming days, we went to our apartment at L’Azur which was to be our home for the next 8 days.

We were all delighted with the 2 bed roomed apartment with balcony which included a built-in barbecue and stunning views of the sea. (Much to Ed and Mike’s delight, the lounge featured a huge flat screen TV on one wall).

We unpacked, freshened up and drove up to Kwelanga Country Retreat at Pacaltsdaorp east of George where Mike, Heather, Trent, Chad & Che were staying to join them for a superb dinner. What a gorgeous location with views across fields where a couple of wildebeest and a baby wildebeest and a buck were grazing over to the ocean.

We're Here

27 hours after leaving home, we were met at Cape Town airport by Mike, Nic and Patrick and warmth!

When we landed at Jo'burg in the morning it was 14° C and it is mid summer!! We had been bumped off our flight to Cape Town and had a 6 hour delay so Ed's friend Jannie sent his driver to collect us and take us back to his home for a wash and lunch. I had a snooze whilst Ed spent his time looking at Jannie's cars.

Last night Mike & Nic did a fish braai for supper and Pat joined us.

Mike and his team have been working flat out to get websites live before Christmas.

Ed has gone for a run yesterday and today along the beach - in training for racing at the end of Jan. This afternoon Nic and I took a picturesque drive along the coast to Hout Bay to buy some scrapbooking supplies to take with us to Wilderness.

We are all going up on Sunday morning early to meet up with Ed's mom, sister & brother-in-law, their children and grandchildren and my brothers, sisters-in-law and their families. Should be fantastic. We have hired a house in Wilderness for the four of us.

Rest of the week in Brief

In brief, as I was either a bit slack or too busy to write:

Wednesday
Luckily we had a chance to go up the mountain, as it turned out to be the only time in the whole two weeks dad & simone were here that the cable car was open.
We were also very lucky to arrive early, by the time we got down from the mountain the queue was hectic and probably would have taken 4 hours to get up to the top.

Afternoon to Muizenburg so Mike could surf (we finally got him away from his computer!). Unfortunately too windy, so as you can see from the photo he bought himself a bodyboard & flippers with his christmas money and we headed to the other side of the mountain to Glen Beach.
This evening we went to Moyo an amazing restaurant at the Spier Estate. Where we sat in a tree to eat, dinner was a buffet - but no usual buffet, there was everything and anything. We were also entertained and got our faces painted.

Thursday
I can't remember what we did on Thursday, I think we attempted Hout bay again to try and get on a boat to Seal Island. Then stopped in camps bay and had a little snack on the beach front.
Evening we went to the Indian at the waterfront, and back home in time to check in for the flights tomorrow night.

Friday - Last day
It was great dad and simone's flight was late tonight, so we had the whole day still.
First thing we all went for a swim at Sea Point pool, lunch we went to la perla just down the road, was one of the best meals I have ever had.
Lazed by the pool, then left for the airport, where we had dinner at the airport after dad & simone had checked in.

Tuesday - Mount Nelson

After a wet start the day starts to get sunny. We waited for Mike to get home from BNI & a meeting, then off we all went to Fruit & Veg City to stock up on fruit - and at last Mangoes have come back into season (it's been a long winter with out them). Quick trip to the waterfront for dad to buy a teashirt, then back home to pick up our books for the Mount Nelson. On the way to afternoon high tea we stopped at Green Market Square to pick up a few African gifts.
Needless to say we all left the Mount Nelson very sick and full, and tonight was a very late supper of salad.
Now we are all watching Manchester United in the Champions League.
Tomorrow if clear we will attempt the mountain.

Game Reserve & Winelands

As we missed our game drive in George (luckily we did not stay up there as the reserve was flooded) we booked ourselves into a reserve in the mountains north of Cape Town for the night.
We stayed in lovely little houses where we viewed most of the animals from our beds or balcony.

On arrival we had lunch, then went on an afternoon nature walk, due to the heavy rain we have been having there were a few paths that the river had taken over (so we were left with sopping wet shoes). As expected we did not get to see a leopard - but I was amazed that the leopards were actually wild wild and not introduced, they actually live in the mountains.

Dinner was at the little pub, we had the choice of Prawns, Hake, Kudo Sausages, and steak which were BBQ'ed for us as a buffet style - so Mike had 2 big steaks and 8 prawns.

We awoke on Monday morning to the rain hitting hard against tin roof, unfortunately it was raining so hard that it was impossible to go on a game drive. With our refunds in our pocket we took to the wine farms. I was designated driver, but I bought a case of champagne & stocked up on our wine for the Christmas period. Once we were through the mountain pass it was a bit brighter. Finished the day with a game of Putt Putt and dinner at Theos steak restaurant.

Saturday - Cape Point & Simons Town

After our adventures of the day before, we woke to a blue blue day. We drove up to the mountain, but due to the wind the cable car was still shut. Luckily we were in cape town as my library books needed to be taken back (saving a R1 fine!!) so a quick trip to the centre of town before heading along the peninsula to see the penguins at Simons Town and then on to Cape Point. Seeing a few baboons on the way.

Why we did not get to Knysna

As we reached the far side of George the police were stopping people from carrying on the N2, as the road in Sedgefield was closed. Unsure what to do we phoned Uncle Pete who had a route taking to the old road to Knysna.
Entering Wilderness you are usually faced with the amazing beach view with a long stretch of sandy beach. Today everything was sea - no beach. Uncle Pete said this was a once in a hundred year thing. We started on the old route, but as you can see from the top picture we hit a problem - the road was now a fast flowing river. We turned back to take stock of everything at Uncle Pete's & Mim's. After reviewing weather forecasts, and phoning a few people- there was no way we could get to Brenton, the only option was to turn back to cape town, meaning we would only have wasted 1 day.

All together it was a 10 hour trip to see Aunty Mim and Uncle Pete for a cup of tea, but a big adventure.

Day 3 - Robben Island

10 o'clock boat to Robben Island, we left Mike behind working (I worked double last week!).
Toured around the island and saw Nelson Mandelas cell & penguins.
Back home now and having bobotie for dinner.

Day 2: Bus Trip

Up and about early to visit Greenpoint market, this only happens every Sunday and this is the only Sunday that we will be in Cape Town. Dad & Simone purchased some nice African goodies.
Back to the flat, and before heading down the road to catch the open top bus, we went across to Woolworths for some picnic stuff.
Bags packed we walked to Beach road and waited for the bus, that comes every 20 minutes. The whole bus tour is about 2 hours, we stopped in Camps Bay for a relax on the beach, and to test the freezing cold sea.
We are now back home getting ready to head back to town for some dinner.
Tomorrow we have booked for Robben Island.

Day 1 of Dad & Simone Trip

The flight landed only 5 minutes late, and Dad & Simone were through within the hour.
We went back to the flat to settle in then went to The Waterfront for lunch. We tried a Mexican restaurant that we had never been to before. We had a nice stroll around, spotting some seals bathing on the jetty.
Taking a detour home, we stopped in Kloof for a drink after visiting the butcher for meat and to stock up on biltong.
The weather was amazing, especially after the cloudy cold week we had last week.
The Scotland, Italy football was on, so we had a few glasses of wine/beer and some bbq'd springbok sausages. Then off to bed after a long day.

Last day in Ghana

Can hardly believe that it is our last day at the Labadi Beach Hotel on the Accra coast. Our last day of glorious warmth and sunshine. The job went well and the people we worked with were lovely.
The last couple of days we have had a number of armed guards in the hotel because the Ghanian national football tem, the All Black Stars are staying here as are the Emirates team. This meant, too, the presence of TV journalists. None of this was intrusive, though, and we have just relaxed around the pool and on the beach.
7.20 pm All packed and ready to go. Ed dozing in room watching football. another lovely day of lounging on the beach, swimming and reading. Did not feel as relaxed as the other days as we are already thinking of all we have to do this coming week. I will post some pics when I get home as I am doing this on the hotel computer and cannot transfer the photo's.
Hope that Andy and Simone have arrived safely and are enjoying the SA sunshine. Have a great holiday A & S.

Ghana Greetings

We were ready to board the plane at Heathrow when we were told that we needed a visa and that BA would not allow us to travel. Panic. We normally check travel requirements and had certainly checked what vaccinations and medication we needed, but had assumed that the client would have warned us regarding a visa and provided us with a letter of introduction. After a number of phone calls and checking with a senior person, we were allowed on the plane knowing that we would have to buy our visa when we got there. Thank goodness we weren't the last ones holding up the flight but we definitely felt scaley walking on after everyone had expected the flight to have left!
Really good food and service on BA and arrived just 40 minutes late. We were almost put on the same plane back but were eventually granted a visa for 8 days. Retrieved our baggage and were delighted to find someone holding a sign with Lesley Perk on it! Labadi Beach Hotel is beautiful and we have a room with w balcony overlooking the swimming pool and gardens.
Only been here two days but are feeling really relaxed - enjoying reading by the pool, walks on the beach and just sitting at the beach cafes watching Ghana at play.

My New Car

Mike says when we have children my Porsche will be too small, so I have found the perfect family car:

We went to the launch last night at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, we got to dress smart and drink champagne & were served mini burgers on sticks. (Although when we do have the money, Mike will have to buy his Aston Martin before I'm allowed this one.)

NEVER FLY AIR FRANCE

Here is my copy of the complaint letter that Air France will be receiving from Jan & Jim.

Dear Barbara

Mr J Alsop & Mrs J Alsop
Air France AF2271 11th October 2007
Air France AF0990 11th October 2007

After speaking to you last week about the unsatisfactory service we had received through Air France on our outbound journey, I write to formally submit a complaint.

Firstly, I am angry that my experience was not dealt with immediately. I called last week whilst in South Africa and after a half an hour International phone call, the only thing resolved was that I must write a letter (on your website under the contact details you have a telephone number for customer complaints, if complaints cannot be made over the phone, why list a telephone number to call, if the service consultant will only say “complaints can only be made in writing”?).

If service really does mean something to Air France, action would have been taken straight away. An immediate compensation agreement or even an upgrade would have been sufficient enough to ease both mine & my wife’s fears of flying home, and would have put some faith back into our opinion of Air France. Unfortunately this was not the case, and I am spending the first day back from my holiday having to write this letter.

On arrival at Heathrow (at the allocated 3 hours before our flight departure to Johannesburg) we checked in at the Air France desk and all appeared to be fine.
The London to Paris flight AF2271 was delayed by 40 minutes, at this time we did not panic as we had been told that the connecting long haul flights will always wait in Paris. On arriving in Paris at 23:05 we were told the plane had left without us. I understand it does take some time to get us to the plane & our luggage transferred but surely the plane could have waited and left 30 minutes late (The Johannesburg flight was due to leave at 23:15) I have been on numerous flights and planes very rarely leave on time.

Recalling back to the waiting area in Heathrow, all flights seem to be delayed due to fog, so surely when checking in it was known the flight would be delayed, and it may have been best to transfer us on to an earlier Paris flight.

Our ticket was purchased as a flight from London to Johannesburg; it is the fault of Air France that the connecting flight was not met by us. With a delay of only 40 minutes it meant we missed the Paris to Johannesburg flight, your timings are seriously wrong when making bookings from London to Johannesburg and don’t allow for even very minor delays.

There was to be an early flight from Paris to Johannesburg the following morning, unfortunately we were informed this was fully booked, so we would be transferred to Amsterdam where we would be put on a later flight the next day. At this point, I was amazed that action was not taken to find space on the next Paris flight. Unfortunately there was nothing we could do other than what we were instructed to do.

New tickets were issued in Paris by Dela Hodde (Air France Staff), he ensured us that our luggage would be travelling with us and would be in Johannesburg when we arrived. (As it transpires this was not the case).

All Johannesburg passengers (as we were not the only ones) were transferred to Amsterdam and we were put up in a “hotel” until we had to be transferred back to Amsterdam Airport. Pick up was at 5am, therefore only managing 3 hours in the “hotel”. In hindsight this was a good thing, as the “hotel” was very unsatisfactory, we were given a room where we actually had to check the bed sheets, as the overall impression of the rooms were sleazy, and we were left itching. I would expect the hotels that you are linked with to reflect the brand of Air France!!! (After a return flight with Air France, I am now under the impression that this hotel is truly a reflection of Air France’s standards).

So now it is 5am the following day, we should have been 3 hours away from Johannesburg, instead we had flown twice and were still only in Amsterdam, being the start of day 2 in the same clothes.

Arriving back at Amsterdam airport (now tired & hungry – missing breakfast, which only started at 5 am in the “hotel”). We were directed straight to the departure gate by KLM staff. On arrival at the gate we took the queue and waited, when it was our time to board we were told we did not have boarding cards – we had to go back to the check in desk and get some. At this point the check in desk was at least a mile away, my wife and I had to run back and receive the boarding cards.
Firstly we had specifically been told to go straight to boarding by KLM staff, secondly why didn’t KLM staff help us back to check in, and thirdly I am a 55 year old man with arthritis & had been awake for over 24 hours – and we had to rush as fast as we could there and back. On returning to the boarding gate of course we were sweating, and due to Air France –we had no change of clothing. Therefore we were to take an 11 hour flight, feeling unclean & uncomfortable, and as it turns out we were still another 24 hours away from receiving our luggage.

KLM flight KL591 arrived in Johannesburg at about 21:15pm on 12th October 2007 over 12 hours later than expected. Our journey & experience with Air France was not over there. We went to pick up our luggage to be told that it was still in Paris. This was funny seeing as we had specifically been ensured by Dela Hodde that our luggage will be with us. The luggage would be arriving the following morning and we would have to return to the International terminal to pick it up.

Arriving at Johannesburg Airport, we had domestic flights booked to Durban. Friends in Cape Town, when hearing we were now on the KLM Amsterdam flight, had had to change the domestic flights and book us into a hotel, as there are no domestic flights to Durban after 9pm. As our friends knew, because we were on the plane, we would not know any of this on arrival at Johannesburg. They phoned Air France at Johannesburg airport and were assured that someone from KLM/Air France would meet us off the flight and let us know the new details. At around 10:30pm we were still walking aimlessly around Johannesburg airport wondering what to do. No one from Air France tried to locate us, even after promises that this would be done. We thought this could have been the least that should have been done for all our troubles.

At this point my wife was in tears of fear, this was our first long haul flight and first time in South Africa. With the media hype about Johannesburg we really did fear for our safety. When 2 people come off an Air France flight in tears and wanting to turn around and go home – is this a reflection of good customer service? I think not, and would be greatly amazed if you think this is expectable.

Finally, after numerous International phone calls on my mobile, I was able to reach our friends for the details. We headed to the hotel and returned early to pick up our luggage, which now meant time was tight with our new domestic flights that had been booked (our friends not expecting our luggage to arrive 12 hours after us). I understand that we did not book the South African domestic flights with Air France, but when I originally gave myself 5 hours to get from the Air France Johannesburg flight to a Durban Mango flight – I expect to reach my destination as planned.

24 hours late we picked up our luggage and we were finally on our way to Durban, after a 36 hour journey from London to Johannesburg – a journey that should have taken 12.

Inline with the service we received on our outbound journey, the same incapability of Air France was met on our return journey. On arrival in Paris, de ja vu occurred and we were told the flight had been cancelled. Our daughter was already on her way to Heathrow airport to pick us up, we had to tell her to drive back, we were eventually told we could be put on a flight as, as you can imagine we were very irate and a few harsh words got us on the plane. This makes us wonder maybe these harsh words should have been spoken in Paris 2 weeks ago, and maybe something could have been sorted, and are holiday not ruined.

Due to the 40 minutes delay in London Heathrow we incurred the following expenses. The least that should be expected from Air France would be the full reimbursement of all these expenses, which do not even take into account the days of our holiday lost, tours that had to be cancelled in Durban because we were arriving late, the fact we had to stay in the same clothes for 3 days, and the apprehension that we suffered the rest of the holiday dreading the flight home & not fully being able to relax. For this I wonder if Air France is big enough to admit its mistakes or at least care about the experience their customers have and provide additional compensation.

£41.32 Change of Domestic flights
£51.56 Hotel
£13.85 Taxi to hotel
£5.07 shuttle back to airport
£35.00 International phone calls (excluding cost of talking to customer care whilst in South Africa).

You may not think our £650 ticket each is a lot of money, but to us we work the whole year to save up for a nice holiday and to pay this amount for the service we received from Air France is despicable.

Have just seen Jan & Jim were not the only ones with Air France problems. When you type in "air france blog" you get the following complaints at http://www.blogjam.com/2005/12/08/air-farce/
and there's a whole blog at avoidairfrance.blogspot.com
